Cypresses: Van Gogh, Böcklin, and Beyond (Zoom)
Cypress trees painted repeatedly, so movingly, and all within his last year by Vincent van Gogh, were celebrated by an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in 2023. Greatly expanding upon this exhibition to include the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin who was also creating equally iconic and haunting images of cypresses twenty years before van Gogh, as well as Munch, Signac, Dali, Ernst, Gaudi, and 5th C. BCE and 16th C. Persian art, we will have a comparative exploration of the unique inspiration offered by cypresses.
