Punk Revolution: From 1960s Roots to Modern Resonance

Punk rock’s explosion in 1976 changed the popular music scene and almost all of popular culture–movies, fiction, fashion, graphic design–and it continues to resonate today. This class will explore how the seeds of punk were sown in the 1960s in the U.S., trace the various developments in the U.S. and the U.K. through the 1990s, and conclude with a brief look at developments since the year 2000. We will listen to songs by groups such as the Velvet Underground, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, the Clash, X-Ray Spex, the Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Black Flag, Nirvana, Bikini Kill, and Sleater-Kinney.
