Understanding Classical Music    NEW!

Many of us find it daunting to get to know and understand classical music. Some pieces are very long, many pieces don’t have words, and there are often many different recordings of the same piece, making it difficult to know how to choose one to listen to. This class will offer a roadmap through these often confusing issues, explore the different stylistic periods, and illuminate how we can learn from, and enjoy, different performances of the same work. Musical examples will come from a broad range of composers but will focus on music by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, and Stravinsky.
