Do you love the idea of taking amazing landscape photos, but can't find those jaw-dropping locations? Perhaps you've played around with photographing landscapes but they just fall flat of the image you've conjured up in your mind? During this special workshop, you will learn not only to take gorgeous landscape photographs but also some history about the park and the amazing Tarrytown Lighthouse, constructed in 1883. It recently received a fresh coat of paint and looks spectacular! Kingsland Point Park offers gorgeous views of the Hudson River, Mario Cuomo Bridge, Hook Mountain State Park, and features the only dental themed playground in the United States! Topics include proper exposure for landscapes and sunsets, white balance, depth of field settings for landscapes, composition and perspective techniques, metering for landscapes and sunsets, and blue hour photography.
This workshop takes place entirely on-site at Kingsland Point Park. We'll start with an introduction and then we'll dive right in to the material. During the lecture, photography skills and techniques will be taught with a mix of lecture and demonstration and plenty of practice time. For the remaining time you will be given the opportunity to create your own photographs using the techniques you have learned. During this time, your instructor will be roaming around providing individual attention to each participant to help make your photographs the best they can be.
This class is open to photographers of all levels and requires a digital camera (no smartphones or tablets).
PLEASE NOTE:
- Please bring your fully charged camera and any accessories you'd like to have; see "Equipment Recommendations" below.
- As this workshop is 5 hours in length and is being given in a public park, you should be prepared to do quite a bit of walking. The park is 18 acres in size and we will be exploring it fully.
- As we'll be standing most of the time and walking through a public park that could include rough terrain, a good, comfortable pair of shoes is a must!
- Although we will be sticking to designated paths and grassy areas, as expected in any nature setting, you may encounter rough terrain, insects, dangerous plants such as poison ivy, animals, and might even get a little dirty, so please plan accordingly.
- There are no concessions available in the park. You may find it helpful to bring a water bottle and a light snack, especially if it's a warm day.
- There are full restroom facilities; however, they are not always open, in which case a port-a-potty is available. We suggest bringing hand sanitizer.
EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:
- All participants, no matter what type of digital camera (no smartphones or tablets please) they have, will find enjoyment and learn something from participating in this workshop. However, we do have some recommendations that will help to ensure you get the most value out of the workshop.
- If you are using a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, we recommend bringing both wide-angle lenses as well as telephoto lenses. Wide-angle lenses are great for taking sweeping vistas during sunset. Longer lenses work well for detailed shots of the lighthouse and structure.
- A sturdy tripod, that is not easily affected by wind and a cable release, would be helpful to have as well once the sun starts to set and we get towards blue hour. We recommend a wired release instead of a wireless as they do not require batteries nor depend on line of site for their operation.
- Further equipment recommendations will be provided in a detailed email prior to the field trip.
