The Beatles influenced Bob Dylan to “go electric” and starting with his historic Newport Folk Festival performance on July 25, 1965, he outraged the folk music world by performing with an electrified rock and roll band. Soon after, the California-based band The Byrds followed Dylan’s lead and pioneered a sound that bridged the gap between traditional American folk music groups like The Kingston Trio and the modern rock and roll music of the day. In this lecture, we will examine the evolution of the early 1960s folk music scene in the U.S., from the impact of the Beatles on American folk musicians to the explosion of the folk rock music scene in the U.S. and Great Britain that would eventually result in the huge commercial success of country music and folk rock in the late 1960s into the 1970s. We will end by looking at the influence of folk rock on current artists, including Taylor Swift and Mumford & Sons.

Ready to make music, share a laugh (or several), and strum your way to happiness? This beginner-friendly ukulele class is designed especially for adults looking to try something new, have fun, and perhaps even unleash their inner rock star — or at least a very enthusiastic campfire singer. Over six laid-back weeks, you’ll learn to strum, play basic chords, keep a steady rhythm, and sing songs that speak to you. The only prerequisites: a fun-loving spirit and a song you can physically sing (yes, that one you belt out in the shower counts). Bring one song idea to class, and we’ll take care of the rest. This class is structured for beginners and will go at a relaxed pace with plenty of musical “aha!” moments and good-natured laughs along the way. Come as you are, leave with a smile, and maybe even a few new friends. Warning: Spontaneous humming and toe-tapping may occur. Ukuleles will be provided for class use.

IT’S ALWAYS A YOGA PRACTICE, NEVER A YOGA PERFECT
Practice like it’s the first time every time.
Whether you want to begin a yoga practice or maintain your yoga practice, this class has been designed for you! In this class, you will learn the fundamental and foundational postures of the yoga practice. Each practice creates a pattern of consistency, develops muscle memory, and strengthens the mind-body connection. We will explore various ways to both enter and transition from one posture into another, building towards learning the SUN SALUTATION: a yoga sequence practiced by yogis all over the world. You will begin to integrate the physical postures, with the asana (pose) names in both English and Sanskrit, develop an understanding of cues often heard in studio classes, with a nod to those that sound strange: "pull your naval to your spine" and "root down to rise up." Yoga is a relaxant. Yoga heightens awareness, cultivates patience, and balances the body-mind connection. Yoga improves strength, musculoskeletal fitness, and flexibility. Learning the basics sets you on the path to a lifelong yoga practice. All you need to do is show up, roll out your mat, and practice like it's the first time every time.
We are offering Yoga Basics this fall on Tuesdays, starting 9/30, at 5:45 pm.
