In this introduction to Mah Jongg, students will learn the basics of this fun and social game. We will discuss the rules and object of the game, learn tiles/symbols and cards of hands (40/50 different combinations), illustrate examples of winning hands and hands-on practice, and systematically break down the multi-layered components of the game into easily understood segments.

This course builds on Beginner Bidding by reviewing core concepts and introducing quantitative bidding. Students will learn standard opening bids, how to evaluate the strength of 1♣, 1♦, 1♥, and 1♠ openings, and how to choose the correct suit. We will cover the meaning of common responses — including 1-over-1, 2-over-1, notrump responses, and forcing bids — and how opener describes balanced hands across two bids. The course also explains opener’s rebid options, including raises, new-suit rebids, reverses, and jump shifts. Students will be introduced to two essential conventions: Stayman, used after 1NT–3NT openings to explore 4-card majors, and Jacoby Transfers, which allow responder to show a 5-card major while keeping opener as declarer. By the end of the course, students will have a clearer understanding of modern bidding structure and improved confidence navigating follow-up auctions.

Players will also deepen their understanding of opening principles and the basics of positional play. The instructor will meet each student at their level and provide individualized challenges to help everyone improve. Instructor Bio: Lawrence Johnson is an experienced instructor and chess player who has been involved with the game throughout his life. Prior to joining the NSCF, he worked in New York City schools for many years. Lawrence has experience teaching adults and children alike. His personal highlight over the board was beating Grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric in a simul, when the Yugoslav Grandmaster was at the height of his powers!

Have you learned the Tarot, but are hesitant to read for others? This class will help you interpret several tarot spreads in a relaxed atmosphere and will help you gain the confidence to share this tool with others.

Do you feel inspired to develop your own psychic abilities? If you answered yes, this hands-on series of classes is designed for you. We’ll begin with the mechanics of psychic readings and the methods for perceiving information. You will learn about the meaning of color and symbols. You will build and practice your psychic skills by engaging in targeted and varied exercises with other students. You will learn about and experience remote viewing and be given clear information, directions, and tips for deepening your intuitive awareness. Each session will include a guided meditation to expand your consciousness. You will receive individualized attention, coaching, and mentoring. At the end of the 3rd session, you will feel empowered from experiencing your own psychic abilities and be able to plan the next steps in your development. This series is excellent for both beginners and those with prior experience. Each student will be gently encouraged to stretch beyond their present level of psychic ability.

This class is designed for players who have a basic understanding of the game and are eager to enhance their skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Offering a blend of instruction and practice, participants can refine their strategies, learn advanced techniques, and receive real-time feedback from an experienced instructor. Students should have taken Beginner Canasta or have equivalent experience.
